Breathe publishes Scottish NHS Home Oxygen Health Economic study

Leading manufacturer Invacare has been working in partnership with the Scottish NHS, Dolby Vivisol Scotland’s Home Oxygen supplier and Phyllis Murphie, Respiratory Nurse Consultant and York Health Economics Consortium, to produce a case study that highlights the significant cost benefits to healthcare trusts and patients of using self-fill ambulatory oxygen systems compared with the traditional delivered oxygen cylinder products.
 
Recognising the increase in respiratory disease such as COPD, and the ever diminishing NHS budgets to cover patient care, the paper explores the potential cost savings and benefits that these new self-fill systems can bring in meeting both party’s needs.  More importantly the paper has revealed that self-fill systems for patients has had a positive impact on the quality of life for individuals.
 
The traditional method of using delivered oxygen cylinder refills has often restricted patients from carrying out daily tasks as cylinders are heavy and static limiting activities.  However self-fill systems are proven to supply efficient delivery of oxygen in portable cylinders that allows far greater freedom and independence for the patient’s lifestyle.
